Predation Pressure of Invasive Marsh Frogs: A Threat to Native Amphibians?

چکیده
Anurans have been introduced in many parts of the world and often become invasive over large geographic areas. Although predation is involved declines invaded amphibian populations, there a lack quantitative assessments evaluating potential risk posed to native species. This particularly true for Pelophylax water frogs, which western Europe, but no studies date examined their on other amphibians range. Predation by marsh frogs (Pelophylax ridibundus) was assessed stomach flushing once month four months 21 ponds southern France. Nine percent stomachs contained amphibians. Seasonality major determinant consumption. effect mediated body size, with largest invaders ingesting bigger natives, such as tree frogs. These results show that represent threat through ability forage at adult stage. The also indicate numbers are predated. More broadly, fact site- time-specific highlights need repeated samplings across habitats key periods clear understanding impact invaders.

Chytridiomycosis: a global threat to amphibians.
Chytridiomycosis, which is caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, is an emerging infectious disease of amphibians. The disease is one of the main causes of the global decline in amphibians. The aetiological agent is ubiquitous, with worldwide distribution, and affects a large number of amphibian species in several biomes. In the last decade, scientific research has substantially increased kn...
متن کاملInvasive hybrid tiger salamander genotypes impact native amphibians.
Although the ecological consequences of species invasions are well studied, the ecological impacts of genetic introgression through hybridization are less understood. This is particularly true of the impacts of hybridization on "third party" community members not genetically involved in hybridization. We also know little about how direct interactions between hybrid and parental individuals infl...
متن کاملParasite-mediated predation between native and invasive amphipods.
Parasites can structure biological communities directly through population regulation and indirectly by processes such as apparent competition. However, the role of parasites in the process of biological invasion is less well understood and mechanisms of parasite mediation of predation among hosts are unclear. Mutual predation between native and invading species is an important factor in determ...
متن کاملSeasonal Spatial Patterns of Two Sympatric Frogs: California Red-legged Frog and American Bullfrog
—The introduced American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) has been implicated in the decline of native amphibians. Bullfrogs have become widespread in California and are a threat to the native California Red-legged Frog (Rana draytonii). The two species are ecologically similar, and the bullfrog is a predator to the red-legged frog that may influence its habitat use patterns. We analyzed the ...
متن کاملFrogs in the spotlight: a 16‐year survey of native frogs and invasive toads on a floodplain in tropical Australia
Although widespread declines in anuran populations have attracted considerable concern, the stochastic demographics of these animals make it difficult to detect consistent trends against a background of spatial and temporal variation. To identify long-term trends, we need datasets gathered over long time periods, especially from tropical areas where anuran biodiversity is highest. We conducted ...
